Biographical / Historical
Prior to the establishment of the Office of Field and Career Services (FACS), Beloit College had separate Office of Career Planning (also called Career Counseling) and Field Placement Office, which supported the Field Term element of the Beloit Plan. The 1978-1979 Beloit College Catalog tells us, "Field Experience and Career Services are two Beloit programs designed to assist students to define directions for their post-graduation world of work." Later catalogs say "one of the goals of Beloit College is to help students develop awareness of available career options together with the skills necessary to pursue them. The office of field and career services presents a full range of support services and resources that allow students to identify, explore and experience career and life options before and upon graduation from Beloit. The overall program supports three main elements: career planning…field experience programs… and placement services and work search readiness." [1991-3 Catalog]
A key aspect of the Beloit Plan focused on experiential learning, so much of the FACS literature places emphasis on this as well. FACS sponsored career fairs, assisted in internship placement, summer employment, and shadow experiences.
In the fall of 2009, FACS became the Office of Career Services, and with the newly created Office of Community-Based Learning, formed the Liberal Arts in Practice Center (LAPC).
