Student Handbooks collection

The first student handbook was published by the YMCA of Beloit College. It contained an academic calendar, college history, YMCA and other student group info, housing info, ads, and railroad and mail delivery time tables. Later editions had college songs and yells, and other fun content. At some point between 1917 and 1929, it stopped being published by the YMCA/YWCA, and during the 1930s, the student handbook was not published at all.

The 1944-1945 edition was published by the Associated Students of Beloit College. From 1958-1963 the handbook switched to just printing regulations, both academic and non-academic.

"This is Beloit" was an orientation handbook that accompanied the Freshman Days schedule, originally conceived as a freshman class of 1961 project. It contained sections on Beloit College history, the campus, student government, activities, organizations, student life, residential life, and a college slang appendix.

The "Handbook of Student Regulations," starting in 1967, did not include the sections on student life, and as the title suggests, only included administrative rules, taken from the recently revised Administrative Policy Manual.

"Romping Around Beloit," printed during another break in regular student handbook publishing in the late 1960s and early 1970s, was a very bare bones but practical guide with brief explanations of what services the different offices provided, where to find which fraternity, what programs are, and what to do in case of bothersome animals. It appears to be written solely by students.

The 1976-1977 Academic Handbook "manual [was] intended to serve several advising purposes related to the academic program at Beloit…designed to be useful to both new students and continuing students." Preface written by Ann Bausum'79, Dean of Students, faculty member, registrar. It contains lots of archival photos.

The 1978 Student Handbook "is a revival of a publication which disappeared from the college scene several years ago. It was decided this year to bring together in one source information about non-academic policies and services which had heretofore been scattered in a number of publications which students seldom saw. It is written by the Dean of Students Office with assistance of several students. The handbook does not include everything useful—for example academic requirements which may be found in the current catalogue—and often reflects the opinions of the authors. But it does contain up-to-date regulation, policies and procedure governing student life, housing, and extracurricular activities."

During the 1990s, the Student Activity Calendar and Student Handbook were printed together. For the 2006-2007 academic year, the student handbook was mainly available digitally. Only a handful of copies were printed.
