Language of Materials

Stephen Peet was one of the original founders and trustees of Beloit College. His son, Stephen Denison Peet, was in the college's first graduating class of 1851, and he went on to become a prominent archaeologist and founder of the journal American Antiquarian. This collection gathers various works about the two Stephen Peets, including articles, biographies, and genealogical research, as well as some of their correspondence, professional publications, and other miscellaneous materials. Of particular note is Stephen D. Peet's diary, which he kept from his time as a student at Beloit College from 1849-1851.

This collection has been compiled over the years through separate accessions of various sizes from various offices and individuals, none of which has any accompanying documentation. The original order of the documents is unknown. The arrangement order presented here has been imposed by the College Archives staff.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Some materials have been donated by Stephen D. Peet's daughter, Harriet Peet.
