Biographical / Historical

Materials related to religion on campus from the 1950s to the 1970s were generated by the Christian College Committee, an ad hoc committee active from 1964-1968 dedicated to questions pertaining to Beloit College’s religious identity. A number of other documents explore the relationship between the college, religion, and local churches. Materials related to the Spiritual Life Program were created by the Beloit Spirituality Project, consisting of staff and students, and Vaughan McTernan, consultant for the Spiritual Life Program. The program began its research in 2002, and intended to address issues connected with religion, spirituality, ethics, identity, and meaning on the Beloit College campus. The Beloit Spirituality Project Assessment calls for a program which is “broad-based and general and not tied to any one religious or spiritual perspective” and admits that “the college has moved beyond having a denominational religious presence on campus” (Project assessment). The collection includes surveys, mission statements, comparisons from similar college spiritual life programs, and professor and student feedback.
