Scope and Contents

This collection contains news releases, correspondence, alumni questionnaires, event programs, interview transcripts, magazine clippings, newspaper clippings, photographs, and stellar images taken by the telescope. Much of the materials relate to Daniel J. Schroeder's work as a professor at Beloit College, and as a developer of the Hubble Space Telescope. The collection dates from 1934 to 1996, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1963 to 1996.

Biographical / Historical

Daniel J. Schroeder was born on September 23, 1933 in Kiel, WI. He graduated from Beloit College in 1955 with a B.S. in physics and a B.S. in mathematics. During his studies, he was part of Tau Kappa Epsilon, Sigma Xi (a scientific fraternity), Omicron Delta Kappa (a national leadership fraternity), Phi Beta Kappa (a national honorary scholastic fraternity), and played varsity football. Schroeder received his master’s degree (1957) and PhD (1960) in physics at University of Wisconsin. He was assistant professor (1963-1972) and professor (1973) of physics and astronomy at Beloit College

In 1973, he was given a grant by NASA to help develop the Hubble Space Telescope as a Telescope Scientist. He regulated the optics panel, and searched for planets in other solar systems and nearby quasars once it launched in 1990. He published many scientific papers and a book connected to his work on the telescope. He was named Teacher of the Year of Beloit College three times. He retired from teaching in 1996.

Abstract

Daniel J. Schroeder was a professor of astronomy at Beloit College, and was one of the scientists who worked on the Hubble Space Telescope. This collection contains correspondence, interview transcripts, newspaper and magazine clippings, and photographs dating from 1934 to 1996.

Arrangement

This collection has been compiled over the years through separate accessions of various sizes from various offices and individuals, none of which has any accompanying documentation. The original order of the documents is unknown. The arrangement order presented here has been imposed by the College Archives staff.
