Abstract
Charles Winter Wood, class of 1895, was one of Beloit College's earliest African American students and an accomplished theatre actor and professor of English at the Tuskegee Institute. Wood entered Beloit College Academy in 1887 and joined the college proper in 1891. Although he played on Beloit's popular football team, he became best known for his public speaking and acting. After graduating, Wood continued his education at Chicago Theological Seminary, where he received a doctorate of divinity, and then moved on to Columbia University where he earned a master's degree in the philosophy of education. Booker T. Washington hired Charles Winter Wood as head of Tuskegee Institute's English and Drama departments, where he also became their second football coach. He taught at Tuskegee for over 30 years before resuming his acting career, achieving success as "De Lawd" in the hit Broadway play, Green Pastures.
