Beloit College collection of Honor System materials
Abstract
This collection mainly gathers Robert K. Richardson’s research on Beloit College’s Honor System, where he transcribed articles, correspondence, and meetings minutes regarding cheating, the Honor Code, and especially in the 19th and early 20th centuries, reactions to the handling of honor and morality at the College. There are also brief histories of the Honor System and Honor Code written in 1957 and 1959.

Biographical / Historical
For a period of twenty years a student honor system was in effect at Beloit. Although the first time that the catalogue recognized it was in the year 1905-06, the honor system was inaugurated in 1899-1900. The unpublished manuscript of Robert K. Richardson’s History of Beloit College reveals that in the spring on 1899 the student government drew up a set of proposals called “Articles of Agreement for Establishing the Honor System,” which were ultimately approved by the Faculty.
