Biographical / Historical
The Associated Women Students of Beloit College (AWS)
[from The Beloit College Handbook, 1951, page 28] The object of the Associated Women Students of Beloit College (AWS) is to enforce the laws put forth "by the Faculty of Beloit College; to promote unity and loyalty among the women of the College; and to encourage personal responsibility in furthering all interests of the women of the College."
Intercollegiate Association of Women Students (IAWS)
[from The Beloit College Student Handbook and Directory, 1945-1946, page 10] "Intercollegiate Association of Women Students is made up of the women of the college. The governing body of this association is the IAWS Council which controls the life of the students in the women's dormitories, with all the details of discipline."
Pan-Hellenic Council
[from Student Handbook, Beloit College, 1929-1930, page 22-23] The purpose of Pan-Hellenic Council is to settle "disputes with a minimum of friction and unpleasantlry, and to obtain better understanding, closer and keener co-operation between the Greek Letter" Sororities. The Council is made up of the president of each sorority and a junior member selected by each house.
Women's Self-Government Association (WSGA)
[from Student Handbook, Beloit College, 1929-1930, page 7] "The Women's Self-Government Association (WSGA) was formed so that women of Beloit could take over responsibility of their conduct in the life of the college. This organization includes every girl living in the dormitories, and strives to promote unity and loyalty among them.
Every year this group sends some representatives to a local convention to bring back new ideas and systems. Also they foster the Big Sister movement and strive to maintain a well-regulated normal life in the resident halls."
Women's Student Government Association
[from Mary Williams '14 in The Beloit College Handbook, 1913-1914, page 73] "The Women's student government association is an organization the membership of which consists of every girl in College. This association was organized five years ago with the purpose of making and executing certain rules and regulations, pertaining for the most part to the girls living in the college dormitories. Each girl is placed on her honor in living up to the rules made by the association.
"The executive authority lies absolutely within the power of the student's Council, which consists of the four officers and one member chosen by each of the three upper classes. It will be best for every new girl to become thoroughly acquainted with the set of rules which are given out every year. The association provides the magazines in the reading rooms in Emerson Hall. It is the purpose of this association to promote in every possible way the general interests of the girls of Beloit College."
