Adapted from Center for Language Studies brochure
Center for Language Studies (CLS) is an intensive summer program where students learn the critical languages of the modern age, offering Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian or English as a second language (ESL).
Each segment of the Beloit program offers traditional language instruction and an ‘area study' component. The foreign language segments also include an interdisciplinary core course in the study of the relationship among language, thought, and behavior. "The foreign language 'area study' includes the intellectual, geographical, cultural, economic, and political background of the languages studies with a strong emphasis on the historical relationship of that particular country with the United States. The ESL 'area study' explores the social, political, economic, artistic, and historical elements of American culture.
The interdisciplinary core course in language, thought, and behavior explores the linguistic, performative and rhetorical components of language from both western and non-western perspectives, focusing on the problem of translation."
Originally under the direction of the World Affairs Center (WAC), the program, although associated to the Office of International Education (OIE), now functions independently.
