Beloit College Registers

 Collection
Identifier: AC 21

Scope and Contents

The Beloit College Register lists students who attended Beloit College and the Academy from 1862-1872. The main unique feature of the "Beloit College Register" publication is the lists of college and Academy students in the Army during the Civil War, including the "Hundred Days Men." There are also lists of other things that can be found duplicated elsewhere, such as in the members of the Delian, Alethean, and Archaean Union Literary Societies, alumni, faculty, trustees, commencement week programs, meeting calendars, courses offered, club and student organization members, prize declamations, Junior Exhibit, etc. Later volumes feature a lengthy editorial about the recent school year, written by the Register's student staff. This narrative is similar to what might appear in a yearbook.

The handwritten bound volume of "Record of Students in Beloit College" contains names, class years, years admitted, ages, parents, hometowns, and miscellaneous remarks, as well as a short list of honorary degrees conferred. It covers the years 1847-1892.

The Porter Book contains much similar data, as well as his own "subsequent facts" about some students listed. This is mostly biographical information. The bound volume is labeled 1847-1918, but in fact only covers through 1913.

Biographical / Historical

The publication entitled "Beloit College Register" was created by students in Beloit College's literary societies, including the Delian and Alethean Societies and the Archaean Union. Volume II of the Register was titled "Palladium," and volume III was titled "Athenaeum."

The Porter Book contains a letter written in 1925 from vice president Holden to President Maurer that states, "…there is…a most valuable record of all the Beloit students up to 1913. The book is called 'Professor Porter's Book' and it was kept by him up to the time of his death."
